Georgia Military College State Service
Scholarship Loan
The Georgia Military College (GMC) State Service Scholarship
Loan Program is a service cancelable loan program funded by the
State of Georgia and administered by the Georgia Student Finance
Commission (GSFC).
The Georgia Military College State Service Scholarship Loan was
created to provide outstanding students with a full two-year
scholarship loan program, thereby strengthening Georgia's National
Guard with their membership.
Recipients of the award agree to serve in the Georgia National
Guard for four years (two while enrolled at GMC and two after
graduation). Recipients who do not fulfill the service obligation
must repay the total amount received, plus interest, within five
years.
Value
- Full two-year scholarships covering tuition, fees, room, meals,
books, and uniforms, minus state and federal grants.
- The student must serve in the Georgia National Guard for a
period of four years to complete service repayment (two years while
attending GMC and two years after graduation).
- Recipients who do not fulfill the service obligation must repay
the total amount received, plus interest, within five years.
- Principal deferments options for eligible borrowers.
- No application fees.
- No origination fees.
Eligibility Requirements
To be eligible, you must:
- Be a legal resident of Georgia for a minimum of 12 consecutive
months immediately preceding the date of the beginning of Fall
Quarter at GMC;
- Qualify for regular admission to GMC;
- Have a minimum, high school cumulative grade point average
(GPA) of 2.50 and also have a minimum total score of 800 on the
Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT), or 17 on the American College Test
(ACT).
- Be of high moral character and demonstrate good citizenship as
evidenced in a letter of recommendation from an administrative
official of the high school where the applicant is enrolled at the
time the application is made, or from which the applicant
graduated.
- Meet mental and physical health standards required for
enlistment in the Georgia National Guard.
- Be an entering Freshmen enrolled full time in order to receive
a full, two-year scholarship.
- Be a Senior scheduled to graduate from high school at the end
of the academic year in which the application is made, or must have
completed high school but have not begun college in order to
receive a full, two-year scholarship.
- A student must meet federal Title IV Selective Service
registration requirements.
- A student obligated to repay any State grant or scholarship
previously obtained from GSFC is not eligible to receive another
State grant or scholarship award until the refund or repayment is
paid in full. The student is eligible to receive the GMC Military
Scholarship beginning with the term in which satisfactory repayment
was made, but not for previous terms. A student is ineligible for
the GMC Military Scholarship if he or she is in default on a
federal Title IV or State of Georgia educational loan previously
obtained from or through GSFC unless the student has made
satisfactory arrangements for repayment.
- A student is ineligible if, in accordance with the Drug-Free
Postsecondary Education Act of 1990, he or she has been convicted
for committing certain felony offenses involving marijuana,
controlled substances, or dangerous drugs. A student is ineligible
to receive a GMC Military Scholarship from the date of conviction
to the completion of the next academic term. Institutions are not
required to obtain criminal justice records of GMC Military
Scholarship applicants.
Service Commitment
Serve for two years in the Georgia National Guard after
graduation from Georgia Military College.

Application Procedure

Applications must be completed and received by GSFC by February
3 of each year in order to be considered.
The student must complete Section A and write an essay in
Section B of the application, attach a full-length photograph of
himself or herself to the application, and include a letter of
recommendation from an administrative official at the high
school.
The student must also attach an official high school transcript,
class schedule of the senior year, and the most current SAT or ACT
scores. In addition, the application must be forwarded to a member
of the Georgia General Assembly who represents the student's
congressional area to complete Section C.
Loan Disbursement
Once a student is considered to be eligible for the Georgia
Military College State Service Scholarship Loan program, he or she
must sign a Promissory Note agreeing to serve two years in the
Georgia National Guard after graduation. The Scholarship Loan funds
are then disbursed to GMC.
